Exactly. Our brain is always telling us stories - trying to predict things, to protect us - and most of those stories aren't true. If we wake up and become aware of it, we have countless opportunities to change the script. Even if the stories we choose might not be true, we might as well be telling ourselves something empowering and useful.
Main thing I notice in myself, and probably in a lot of people too, is that there are some thoughts and stories I just don’t stop to question. I automatically treat them as true. That’s the real issue for me at least
I've been there! One thing that has helped me (finally, about two years ago) is learning to meditate. A main thread of the method I've studied under is learning to be aware of our thoughts without getting sucked in to them or driven by them. From that perspective, we have time to make a choice about them.
