I struggle with pet/no pet. I’d choose dog but at 76 still fortunate to travel and would have to consider care when I’m away. At least that would not be subject to tariffs (yet)!
Well thought out article my only comment would be a personal one about size of dog. If you are still independent fit and generally healthy a larger dog should never be out of the question. A lager dog comes with some immediate benefits like you are not bending down low all the time. That’s quite a blessing if you are arthritic. Also they’ve are more up to meeting strains of proper long walks and they do offer at least the impression to others who may not have nice intentions towards you of safety. Although saying that all dogs whatever their size have a strong sense of protecting their own. Good training is of course even more important with a large dog and they probably wouldn’t suit an urban situation. It’s worth mentioning in a lifetime of having dogs and cats I’ve yet to find two who wouldn’t get on. Generally speaking in a domestic situation they become very best of friends.
